In 2022, Addison Winslow ran for Chico City Council as a pro-housing Independent, and won the only progressive seat. He has spent the last four years in the minority, unable to agendize conversations on issues like affordable housing, shelter solutions, and reinvestment opportunities. Now, he’s running again, this time as part of an affordability slate seeking to win a progressive majority for Chico. Here’s how we won the first time, and how you can help us do it again.
It’s no secret, knocking doors is how we win. Movements are built at the speed of trust, so conversations are the most effective tool we have to win votes and foster real relationships between neighbors and the campaign.
Addison for Chico launched with a volunteer party that included a canvassing training and voter ID shift. We provided the food, campaign merch, door-knocking buddies, and good energy. This launch strategy allowed us to immediately leverage the initial momentum for the campaign into action. It also helped build relationships between the core team and volunteers, who continued to return week after week to knock doors.
With the trust we built as a campaign team, we knocked 5,000 doors in 3 months — that’s how we won. We got to know our neighbors, our message, and our community’s resources, which allowed us to scale quickly while developing lasting relationships with our neighbors, many of whom have returned cycle after cycle to help elect local progressive leadership.
